**أُمِّي رَبَّةُ بَيْتٍ.**

**ما عَمَلُ أُخْتِكَ؟**

Mā ʿamalu ukhtika?


B: She is a hairdresser.

**هِيَ خَيّاطَةٌ / مُصَفِّفَةُ شَعْرٍ.**

Hiya khayyāṭah / Muṣaffifatu shaʿr. *(Note: "خَيَّاطَة" can mean "hairdresser" in common Moroccan dialect.)*


A: What does your brother do?

**ما عَمَلُ أَخِيكَ؟**

**العامَ الماضِي ذَهَبْتُ إِلى إِسْبانِيا. وَذَهَبْتُ أَيْضاً إِلى فَرَنْسا وَبِرِيطانِيا العُظْمى.**

Al-ʿāma al-māḍī dhahabtu ilā Isbāniyā. Wa-dhahabtu ayḍan ilā Faransā wa-Brīṭāniyā al-ʿuẓmā.


A: And now?

**وَ الْآنَ؟**

Wa al-āna?


B: At the moment I am on a trip across Morocco.

**في هَذِهِ اللَّحْظَةِ أَنَا في رِحْلَةٍ عَبْرَ المَغْرِبِ.**

Fī hadhihi al-laḥẓati anā fī riḥlatin ʿabra al-Maghrib.

**كَيْفَ تُسافِرُ؟**

Kayfa tusāfiru?


B: I travel by car, by coach, by plane. It depends.

**أُسافِرُ بِالسَّيَّارَةِ، بِالحافِلَةِ، بِالطَّائِرَةِ. ذَلِكَ يَعْتَمِدُ.**

Usāfiru bi-as-sayyārah, bi-al-ḥāfilah, bi-aṭ-ṭā'irah. Dhālika yaʿtamidu.


A: Why do you travel?

**لِماذا تُسافِرُ؟**

Limādhā tusāfiru?


B: Listen, I love my country. I love seeing different people. I love seeing the sun at noon in the mountains. I love seeing the public lighting in the city at nightfall. I love breathing the fresh air in the middle of the countryside. I love hearing the noise of traffic in big cities.

**اِسْمَعْ، أَنَا أُحِبُّ بَلَدِي. أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَرى أُناساً مُخْتَلِفِينَ. أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَرى الشَّمْسَ في الظُّهْرِ في الجَبَلِ. أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَرى الإِضاءَةَ العُمومِيَّةَ في المَدِينَةِ عِنْدَ غُروبِ الشَّمْسِ. أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَتَنَفَّسَ الهَواءَ النَّقِيَّ في وَسَطِ الرِّيفِ. أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَسْمَعَ ضَجيجَ المُرورِ في المَدائِنِ الكَبِيرَةِ.**

Ismaʿ, anā uḥibbu baladī. Uḥibbu an arā unāsan mukhtalifīn. Uḥibbu an arā ash-shamsa fī aẓ-ẓuhri fī al-jabali. Uḥibbu an arā al-iḍā'ata al-ʿumūmiyyata fī al-madīnati ʿinda ghurūbi ash-shams. Uḥibbu an atanaffasa al-hawā'a an-naqiyya fī wasaṭi ar-rīf. Uḥibbu an asmaʿa ḍajīja al-murūri fī al-madā'ini al-kabīrah.

Usually I do my homework early in the morning.

**عادَةً أَقومُ بِواجِباتِي البَيْتِيَّةِ مُبَكِّرَاً في الصَّباحِ.**

ʿĀdatan aqūmu bi-wājibātī al-baytiyyati mubakkiran fī aṣ-ṣabāḥ.


But yesterday I did my homework late in the afternoon.

**لكِنَّ أَمْسِ قُمْتُ بِواجِباتِي في آخِرِ بَعْدَ الظُّهْرِ.**

Lākinna amsi qumtu bi-wājibātī fī ākhiri baʿda aẓ-ẓuhr.


Usually I spend between thirty minutes and an hour on my homework.

**في العادَةِ أَقْضِي بَيْنَ ثَلاثِينَ دَقِيقَةً وَساعَةٍ واحِدَةٍ في واجِباتِي.**

Fī al-ʿādati aqḍī bayna thalāthīna daqīqah wa-sāʿah wāḥidah fī wājibātī.


But yesterday evening I spent two hours on my homework.

**لكِنَّ مَساءَ أَمْسِ قَضَيْتُ ساعَتَيْنِ في واجِباتِي.**

Lākinna masā'a amsi qaḍaytu sāʿatayni fī wājibātī.


This evening I will do all my homework because tomorrow I will go to Casablanca to go see my aunt, who is sick.

**هَذا المَساءَ سَأَقومُ بِكُلِّ واجِباتِي لِأَنَّنِي غَداً سَأَذْهَبُ إِلى الدّارِ البَيْضاءِ لِزِيارَةِ عَمَّتِي، الَّتِي هِيَ مَرِيضَةٌ.**

Hādhā al-masā'a sa-aqūmu bikulli wājibātī li-annanī ghadan sa-adhhabu ilā ad-Dār al-Bayḍā' liziyārati ʿammatī, allatī hiya marīḍah.


Last night I had a headache.

**البارِحَةَ كانَ عِنْدِي صُداعٌ.**

Al-bāriḥata kāna ʿindī ṣudāʿ.


Today I have a toothache.

**اليَوْمَ عِنْدِي أَلَمٌ في أَسْنانِي.**

Al-yawma ʿindī alamun fī asnānī.


I don't know what I will have tomorrow!

**لا أَعْلَمُ ما الَّذِي سَيَكُونُ عِنْدِي غَداً!**

Lā aʿlamu mā alladhī sayakūnu ʿindī ghadan!


Yesterday I was in Ouarzazate.

**أَمْسِ كُنْتُ في وَرْزازاتَ.**

Amsi kuntu fī Warzāzāt.


Today I am in Mohammedia.

**اليَوْمَ أَنَا في مُحَمَّدِيَّةٍ.**

Al-yowma anā fī Muḥammadiyyah.


Tomorrow I will be in El Jadida.

**غَداً سَأَكونُ في الجَدِيدَةِ.**

Ghadan sa-akūnu fī al-Jadīdah.




**(Dialogue 76)**


A: Forgive me, I beg you!

**اِغْفِرْ لي، أَتَوَسَّلُ إِلَيْكَ!**

Ighfir lī, atawassalu ilayka!


B: No, I will punish you this time so that you never do it again!

**لا، سَأُعاقِبُكَ هَذِهِ المَرَّةَ لِكَيْ لا تَعودَ إِلى ذَلِكَ أَبَدَاً!**

Lā, sa-uʿāqibuka hadhihi al-marrah li-kay lā taʿūda ilā dhālika abadan!


A: Forgive me this time, I will never do it again, I promise you!

**اِغْفِرْ لي هَذِهِ المَرَّةَ، لَنْ أَعودَ إِلى ذَلِكَ أَبَدَاً، أَعِدُكَ بِذَلِكَ!**

Ighfir lī hadhihi al-marrah, lan aʿūda ilā dhālika abadan, aʿiduka bi-dhālika!


B: How could I believe you? You have done it many and many times. I will not forgive! If I forgive you this time, you will do it again!

**كَيْفَ يُمْكِنُنِي أَنْ أُصَدِّقَكَ؟ لَقَدْ فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ مِراراً وَتَكْراراً. لَنْ أَغْفِرَ! إِذا غَفَرْتُ لَكَ هَذِهِ المَرَّةَ، سَتَفْعَلُهُ مَرَّةً أُخْرى!**

Kayfa yumkinunī an uṣaddiqaka? Laqad faʿalta dhālika mirāran wa-takrāran. Lan aghfira! Idhā ghafartu laka hadhihi al-marrah, satafʿaluhu marratan ukhrā!


A: Who told you that I will do it again?

**مَنْ قالَ لَكَ إِنَّنِي سَأَفْعَلُهُ مَرَّةً أُخْرى؟**

Man qāla laka innanī sa-afʿaluhu marratan ukhrā?


B: I know you very well. I don't need anyone to tell me.

**أَنَا أَعْرِفُكَ جَيِّدَاً. لا أَحْتاجُ إِلى أَنْ يَقُولَ لي أَحَدٌ ذَلِكَ.**

Anā aʿrifuka jayyidan. Lā aḥtāju ilā an yaqūla lī aḥadun dhālika.


 **WHICH**

A: Which book do you want?

**أَيُّ كِتابٍ تُرِيدُ؟**

Ayyu kitābin turīdu?


B: I want the book that you gave me last time.

**أُرِيدُ الكِتابَ الَّذِي أَعْطَيْتَني إِيَّاهُ المَرَّةَ الماضِيَةَ.**

Urīdu al-kitāba alladhī aʿṭaytanī iyyāhu al-marrata al-māḍiyah.


A: And which coat do you want?

**وَأَيُّ مِعْطَفٍ تُرِيدُ؟**

Wa-ayyu miʿṭafin turīdu?


B: I want the coat that you lent me last month.

**أُرِيدُ المِعْطَفَ الَّذِي أَعَرْتَني إِيَّاهُ الشَّهْرَ الماضِيَ.**

Urīdu al-miʿṭafa alladhī aʿartanī iyyāhu ash-shahra al-māḍiya.


A: Which rose do you prefer?

**أَيَّةُ وَرْدَةٍ تُفَضِّلُ؟**

Ayyatu wardatin tufaḍḍilu?


B: I like this one.

**أُحِبُّ هَذِهِ.**

Uḥibbu hādhihi.


A: Which flower do you prefer?

**أَيَّةُ زَهْرَةٍ تُفَضِّلُ؟**

Ayyatu zahratin tufaḍḍilu?


B: I like the yellow one.

**أُحِبُّ الصَّفْراءَ.**

Uḥibbu aṣ-ṣafrā'a.


A: Whose book is this?

**لِمَنْ هَذا الكِتابُ؟**

Li-man hādhā al-kitābu?


B: It's mine.

**هَذا لِي.**

Hādhā lī.


A: Whose coat is this?

**لِمَنْ هذا المِعْطَفُ?**

Li-man hādhā al-miʿṭafu?


B: It's my sister's.

**هَذا لِأُخْتِي.**

Hādhā li-ukhtī.


A: Whose daughter are you?

**بِنْتَ مَنْ أَنْتِ?**

Bintu man anti?


B: I am Ahmed's daughter.

**أَنَا بِنتُ أَحْمَدَ.**

 **THE COUNTRYSIDE**

A: Why have you come here? Why didn't you stay (in the city)?

**لِماذا جِئْتَ إِلى هُنا? لِماذا لَمْ تَبْقَ في المَدِينَةِ؟**

Limādhā ji'ta ilā hunā? Limādhā lam tabqa fī al-madīnah?


B: I came here because I love the peace and quiet of the countryside. The weather/atmosphere is calm. You don't hear the slightest noise. You can even hear the beating of your heart.

**جِئْتُ إِلى هُنا لِأَنَّنِي أُحِبُّ سَلامَ وَهُدوءَ الرِّيفِ. الجَوُّ هادِئٌ جِدَّاً. لا تَسْمَعُ أَدْنى ضَجَّةٍ. يُمْكِنُكَ حَتَّى أَنْ تَسْمَعَ دَقَّاتِ قَلْبِكَ.**

Ji'tu ilā hunā li-annanī uḥibbu salāma wa-hudū'a ar-rīf. Al-jawwu hādi'un jiddan. Lā tasmaʿu adnā ḍajjah. Yumkinuka ḥattā an tasmaʿa daqqāti qalbika.


A: That's true! You know? I was born in the countryside. I always celebrate my birthday in the countryside. Time passes very slowly here. In the city, on the other hand, everything goes very fast. Here you can see beautiful birds. You can see beautiful hens and beautiful horses.

**هَذا صَحِيحٌ! هَلْ تَعْلَمُ? أَنَا وُلِدْتُ في الرِّيفِ. أَحْتَفِلُ دائِماً بِعِيدِ مِيلادِي في الرِّيفِ. الوَقْتُ هُنا يَمْضِي بِبُطْءٍ شَدِيدٍ. في المَدِينَةِ، على العَكْسِ، كُلُّ شَيْءٍ يَسيرُ بِسُرْعَةٍ شَدِيدَةٍ. هُنا يُمْكِنُكَ أَنْ تَرى طُيورَاً جَمِيلَةً. يُمْكِنُكَ أَنْ تَرى دَجاجَاً جَمِيلاً وَخُيولَاً جَمِيلَةً.**

Hādhā ṣaḥīḥ! Hal taʿlamu? Anā wulidtu fī ar-rīf. Aḥtafillu dā'iman bi-ʿīdi mīlādī fī ar-rīf. Al-waqtu hunā yamḍī bi-buṭ'shin shadīd. Fī al-madīnati, ʿalā al-ʿaksi, kullu shay'in yasīru bi-surʿah shadīdah. Hunā yumkinuka an tarā ṭuyūran jamīlah. Yumkinuka an tarā dajājan jamīlan wa-khuyūlan jamīlah.


B: I also love the soil of here. I also love the sea. But I find the land more beautiful. I think I heard a voice; can you hear it?

**وَأَنَا أَيْضَاً أُحِبُّ تُرابَ هُنا. أُحِبُّ أَيْضَاً البَحْرَ. لكِنَّنِي أَجِدُ الأَرْضَ أَجْمَلَ. أَظُنُّ أَنَّنِي سَمِعْتُ صَوْتاً; هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَسْمَعَهُ?**

Wa-anā ayḍan uḥibbu turāba hunā. Uḥibbu ayḍan al-baḥr. Lākinnanī ajidu al-arḍa ajmal. Aẓunnu annanī samiʿtu ṣawtan; hal tastaṭīʿu an tasmaʿahu?


A: Yes, it's my brother's voice. He is coming towards us.

**نَعَمْ, ذَلِكَ صَوْتُ أَخِي. هُوَ قادِمٌ نَحْوَنا.**

Naʿam, dhālika ṣawtu akhī. Huwa qādimun naḥwanā.


 **THE POST OFFICE**


**(Dialogue 79)**


A: Where are you going?

**إِلى أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُ?**

Ilā ayna tadhhabu?


B: I am going to the post office. And you?

**أَذْهَبُ إِلى مَكْتَبِ البَرِيدِ. وَأَنْتَ?**

Adhhabu ilā maktabi al-barīd. Wa-anta?


A: I am going to the police station.

**أَذْهَبُ إِلى مُفَرَّغِ الشُّرْطَةِ.**

Adhhabu ilā mufarraghi ash-shurṭah.


B: Why?

**لِماذا?**

Limādhā?


A: A thief stole my purse.

**لِصٌّ سَرَقَ مِنِّي مَحْفَظَةَ نُقودِي.**

Liṣṣun saraqa minnī maḥfaẓata nuqūdī.


B: Alright! Here is the police station. Go on! I will wait for you there in front of the door. But look at that man! His face is covered in blood.

**حَسَناً! هُوَذا مُفَرَّغُ الشُّرْطَةِ. اِذْهَبْ! سَانْتَظِرُكَ هُناكَ أَمامَ البابِ. لكِنِ انْظُرْ إِلى هذا الرَّجُلِ! وَجْهُهُ مُغَطًّى بِالدَّمِ.**

Ḥasanan! Huwadhā mufarraghu ash-shurṭah. Idhhab! Sāntaẓiruka hunāka amāma al-bāb. Lākini unẓur ilā hādhā ar-rajul! Wajhuhu mughaṭṭan bi-ad-dam.
